About Pencil Oak

Pencil Oak makes free printable worksheets for kindergarten — children of about five to six. Pick a tool, choose a few settings and get a clean one-page sheet to print at home or in the classroom, with an answer key for the grown-up when you want one.

What you will find here

There are 67 worksheet tools. Math covers counting, adding and subtracting, number lines, patterns, shapes, telling time, tens and ones, skip counting and more. Reading covers picture words, sight words, rhymes, syllables, ending sounds and word searches. Letters and writing covers the alphabet, tracing, handwriting lines and name tracing, plus fine-motor practice: mazes, symmetry, spot the difference, picture puzzles and cutting.

Every tool also has ready-made sheets, and every letter and number has a page of its own: there are 880 ready sheets in all. The sets come as 71 PDF packs you can print in one go, and 10 short guides for parents and teachers explain what to teach first and how to help. Everything is free, and there are no accounts or sign-ups.

How a sheet is made

Each tool builds a sheet from a small set of rules and a random seed. Press New sheet and you get new questions; share the link and someone else sees exactly the same sheet. The answer key is not typed in by hand: it is worked out again from what is drawn on the page, so the key and the sheet cannot disagree. Numbers stay in the range you chose, and a picture does not repeat on a page unless the exercise needs it.

The pictures come from one catalog of 34 everyday themes — apples, kites, frogs, balloons and more. Each one exists in full color and as a black-and-white outline for coloring, so the same sheet works in color and on a plain black-and-white printer.

How we check them

Before a new tool or sheet goes live, automatic checks look at the finished page from the outside. They count what is drawn and compare it with the answer key, make sure each sheet prints on exactly one page on both US Letter and A4, and try the settings panel and the downloads in a real browser. There are more than a hundred of them, and a sheet that fails one does not go out.

Word lists come from written sources rather than from memory. The sight words, for example, follow the Dolch word list, and the picture words are chosen to be familiar and safe for five- and six-year-olds.

Printing

Choose US Letter or A4, and color or black and white. In black and white the pictures become outlines a child can color. Print at 100% ("actual size") so the sheet fits its page. The answer key prints on a separate page only when you ask for it, and you can also download a sheet as a PDF or a PNG picture.

Who makes it
