A classic matching game for learning which lowercase letter goes with each capital. The cards for all 26 letters are on three pages. Each page is a game on its own: start with A to J, then add more pages when children are ready.

How to play

  1. Print a page on card stock, so the letters do not show through. Cut along the dashed lines.
  2. Mix the cards and lay them face down in rows.
  3. A player turns over two cards and says both letters.
  4. A capital and its lowercase letter, like B and b, are a pair: the player keeps them and goes again.
  5. Not a pair? Turn both cards back. The next player tries. The player with the most pairs wins.

Ways to play

With young children, play face up first: spread the cards out and find the pairs together. Then play with only five pairs face down. The capital and lowercase cards of one pair print in the same color, which helps at the start; print in black and white when children should match by the shape of the letter alone. The letters b, d, p and q look alike, so it is worth playing those pages together.
