Addition starts long before the plus sign. A child who puts two apples next to three apples and counts them all has already added — the number sentence is just a way to write down what the pictures show. These worksheets keep both on the page at once: the groups to count, and the sentence that describes them.
Every box shows two groups of the same object with a plus sign between them. Underneath is the number sentence, like 2 + 3 =, and a box for the answer. The child counts the first group, then the second, then everything together, and writes how many in all. Reading the numbers is optional at first: the pictures alone are enough to find the answer, and the sentence starts to make sense by sitting right next to them.
Every group has at least one object — there is no zero on these sheets. "Sums to 5" keeps the totals small enough to see at a glance; "Sums to 10" is the classic kindergarten goal. Click any question to change its object or the size of either group, lock the ones you like, and press New sheet for the rest. The answer key prints on a second page only when you ask for it. Nothing to sign up for.
