Comparing two groups is the first step from counting to arithmetic. A child who can count five apples and then seven apples still has one more thing to learn: that seven is more than five, and that "more" is something you can check by counting rather than by guessing from how big a pile looks. These worksheets practice exactly that comparison.
Every box shows two groups of the same object, one on each side of a dashed line. The child counts both groups and circles the one that has more. Switch "Circle" above to "Fewer" and the same sheet asks for the smaller group instead — the pictures stay, only the question changes, so one page can be used twice. Because both groups show the same object, the only thing that differs is the number, never the kind of picture.
The two groups are never equal, and on a new sheet they always differ by at least two, so a child who counts carefully gets a clear answer. "Count to 5" keeps both groups small enough to see at a glance; "Count to 10" makes counting necessary. Click any question to change its object or the size of either group, lock the ones you like, and pressNew sheet for the rest. The answer key prints on a second page only when you ask for it. Nothing to sign up for.
